Howie Mandel Helps Raise Awareness About Adult ADHD

Sunday November 2, 2008
Howie Mandel, comedian, actor and host of the popular NBC television show Deal or No Deal, wants others to understand more about adult ADHD. To help get the word out and increase awareness and education about adult ADHD, Mandel has joined the Adult ADHD is Real public service campaign.

I am involved in this campaign because I want people to know that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a real and treatable medical disorder. I know because I’m one of the estimated 10 million adults believed to have ADHD.… I want you to know that it’s never too late to seek help for ADHD.” --Howie Mandel

That is such a ridiculous comment. First of all, ADHD is real, and is one of the most impairing public health crisis’ facing this country. If you knew the research, and knew more about the problems facing adults with ADHD, you would know that. Secondly, the campaign is not funded solely by Shire, it is also funded by 3 other public welfare charities, and they are listed. Those charities have boards who are under trememdous scrutiny not to accept more than 10% of their funding from pharmas, and not to appear influenced by them. That, in a climate where public donations have significantly diminished, and they have great difficulty sustaining their missions as public health and welfare entities. As for Shire, they are not the only pharma making ADHD medications. But, they are a very small company, that is wholly dedicated only to ADHD. They do not make medications to treat anyting else, and they support health initiatives, local groups, and publish many, many unbranded educational publications to educate consumers about ADHD, with no mention of their name or their products. What they have done here with Howie is commendable, as is Howie for coming out and speaking about his ADHD. It’s about time. Badmouthing Shire for helping to make this possible is really not helpful, and totally misses the point.

I am 56 and have been on ADD med’s for four years. I also have had Cognitive Behavioral Therapy {CBT} with excellent results. I have seen a huge change in my ability to function, comprehend and understand how to live in this world.

Adult ADD and ADHD are very real conditions. It is very short-sighted to think that if a child has ADHD and she reaches 18 or 21 that it just goes POOF.
