The improvement in my son’s ability to do home work and perform well at school is totally dependent on avoiding food additives. He is sensative to all additives that are derived from petroleum. That includes all food coloring, the preservatives TBHQ, BHT and the artificial flavoring vanillin. He also has problems with hot dogs unless they are made without nitrates.
If he eats even one food containing any of these things he has problems for 3 days. He cannot concentrate on homework, he has trouble getting his thoughts out orally or in writing. He either has trouble getting to sleep or trouble staying awake, he gets upset easily and feels depressed. He also can have trouble with coordination especially at night and can become very sensative to noise and pain.
I recommend that anyone who has a child with ADD or ADHD try them on a diet without food additives for 3-4 days and see the change in your child. Realize that even one food with those additives if eaten within a 3 day span can still cause problems. Schools offer poor food choices. Only the main course at my son’s school is “safe” for him to eat. Once a week they serve Dominos Pizza. That is a problem too because the crust contains Red dye #40.
