Question: Does Poor Parenting Cause ADHD?
Answer:

Often, a difficult issue that parents of children with ADHD deal with is this misperception that others have about ADHD. It is simply not true that poor parenting causes ADHD. But parents have had to deal with this inaccurate assumption for a long time. It’s hurtful, embarrassing and creates feelings of doubt in parents. It’s an awful feeling when others scrutinize your parenting skills and make judgments that are not informed.

This myth about ADHD kids needing more discipline or that ADHD is caused by poor parenting may have morphed or developed from the fact that positive parenting (parenting with clear and consistent expectations and consequences and a home environment with predictable routines) can help manage symptoms of ADHD. Conversely, a chaotic home setting or inconsistent parenting or parenting with little supervision can worsen ADHD symptoms.
