Definition: In cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), an individual learns ways of changing negative patterns of thinking and behaving and replacing these with more productive thoughts and actions. CBT can be effective approach for individuals with ADHD. But for those with more severe ADHD symptoms, it is often helpful to first stabilize symptoms and then begin CBT.

For ADHD, CBT may focus on helping an individual develop better self-management skills such as time management, planning, prioritization, initiating and completing tasks, or organization. CBT can also help a person deal with feelings of anxiety or depression that often accompany ADHD by helping him become more aware of his inaccurate assumptions and beliefs, and develop more realistic and productive ways of thinking.
