Dyslexia is a learning disability that results in an individual having difficulty with language skills, particularly reading. Dyslexia results from an impairment in the way the brain processes information. It can also cause difficulty in other language skills such as spelling, writing and pronouncing words.
Possible early indicators of dyslexia may include the following: difficulty learning to speak, difficulty learning letters and sounds, inability to recognize words and letters on paper, difficulty with spelling, a reading ability well below expected level, problems memorizing number facts.
Formal testing is required to determine if an individual has dyslexia. Treatment includes remedial education using a multi-sensory, structured language approach. Students also benefit from classroom accommodations and modifications.
